The Federal Page for Summer 2020
Things Fall Apart
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
That is the first half of Ireland’s William Butler Yates’ poem titled The Second Coming. It was written 101 years ago. It could as well have been written this summer. Things are falling apart in America. We are experiencing a pandemic that has killed more than 100 thousands of Americans and ravaged our economy loosened upon the world by the Chinese Communists; we have seen riots and marches in our cities including Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Mobs have destroyed monuments to our history, our churches, and looted our businesses as our effemenite leaders and institutions have wept and knelt before them. Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt and Oklahoma State Coach Mike Gundy come to mind. America is in mortal danger. Our business and political ruling class are beyond pathetic, and the vandals know it! For all his faults, and they are many, President Donald Trump is the only man standing between chaos and order. He is the focus of the vandals’ hatred, but it is you reading this column whom they seek to crush. We must stop them or they will destroy us!
In the midst of this madness the vandals have given us a weapon that can be used against them. They have encouraged some cities, such as Norman, to adopt a policy of defunding the local police. This is a gift to us as it is an issue we can use against them in the November 3rd election. I oppose the militarization of the police. I see no reason for the police to have access to military surplus such as tanks. That does not mean I do not support a fully funded and properly trained police force. With less than 100 days until the election we must convince those occupying the political center that we are the only alternative to chaos if this nation is to survive. Things really have gotten to this point, and there is no turning back!
Trump in Tulsa
The June 20th Trump rally was a loss for the campaign as the Bank of Oklahoma (BOK) arena was filled below capacity. I did not attend the rally (for a reason I will mention below) so my information came from those who were there. There were protesters who blocked an entrance to the rally. It was also reported to me that some supporters could not get inside because organizers stopped admitting people at one of the gates.
The real fault for the under capacity crowd was with the Trump campaign and local Republican leadership that bragged a million people wanted tickets to attend. People who would have attended heard that figure and said to themselves, “I’ll never get in.” So they and I didn’t try.
I was watching the rally on television and saw Nigel Farage in the audience. I would have loved to have met him and hosted the Brexit leader after the rally over at Arnie’s Bar downtown. We’d split a pack of cigarettes and commence to solve all of Europe’s and America’s known problems over a number of pints.
The press is corrupt. The Tulsa World ran stories about the up coming Trump rally right along coverage of the Chinese flu as if both events are connected. As bad as our media is, there are some who are exceptional in how low and awful they can be. William R. Wynn the general manager of the Spanish/English Tulsa newspaper La Semana called the rally, and I quote, “the modern day Nuremberg rally...” The modern day Nuremberg rally? Really, Mr. Wynn? The Oklahoman and the Tulsa World wouldn’t go there.
Cathy Costello gave a wonderful performance of our national anthem at the beginning of the rally. I hope President Trump will come back to Oklahoma this fall. Perhaps a rally in Oklahoma City in support of Terry Neese in her bid to unseat Congresswoman Kendra Horn will go better? I’m sure OKC would love to upstage Tulsa. Conservatives will have to show up for the runoff first to ensure Terry wins over her moderate opponent. The fifth district is a must pickup seat if the Republicans have any hope of retaking the House. David Hill, the most viable conservative who ran in the June 30th primary, has already thrown in his support of her.
Senator Lankford to Scrap Christopher Columbus?
Senator James Lankford has pushed for a new national holiday of June 19th commonly referred as Juneteenth. It marks the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves in confederate states occupied by the Union army, was made public in the state of Texas. That’s fine. What is not fine is his and Wisconsin Republican Ron Johnson’s amendment to save $600 million for salaries for federal workers by having the Columbus Day holiday scrapped. And we know how these politicans care about saving our money!
This proposal by Senators Lankford and Johnson empowers the mob destroying the image of Columbus. Both senators are stupid men.
Here’s an idea, since we decided to dethrone our historic figues because we learned they were not saints: perhaps it’s time to scrap Martin Luther King Jr. Day in exchange for Juneteenth? MLK was unfaithful to his wife. That is a fact.
If you look for organized opposition to dropping Columbus Day, don’t look to the Knights of Columbus. Visit their website: KofC.org and try to find any recent mention of Christopher Columbus or any press release regarding the desecration of their namesake’s image. You won’t find anything. Cowardice!
Why does Columbus matter? In 1492 he made the successful journey to the new world and then made it back to the old world of Europe, and informed the Kingdom of Spain about his real estate find. Because of this, millions have been able to come to this place and start new lives away from the oppression lived in the old world. Were all the new settlers saints? No. Humans are flawed, complex beings. There’s a reason Christianity has saints. They stand out as examples for the rest of us. If you like living here, you should thank Christopher Columbus.
The Wisdom of Mary Alice
If you are a listener of The Pat Campbell Show on KFAQ 1170 AM in Tulsa, you have heard the wisdom of Mary Alice Nelson calling in to offer a daily dose of truth. Mary Alice is a refugee from California. In the mid-90s she and her late husband Ken Jabs realized their state was falling apart. Even though she is a native of San Francisco and he was from Anaheim, they both pulled up stakes and headed to Oklahoma to work in the horse industry, she as a trainer and he as a farrier. She is a dear freind. The failure of our political class reminds me of one of her sayings, “There are two political parties: the political class and us.”
